Ballard, a suburban Seattle neighborhood, is located just north of the western portion of Lake Washington Ship Canal. It is adjacent to and northwest of Fremont. Ballard was an independent city from 1890 to 1907 until the town of just 17,000 was incorporated by the Emerald City.
