Like the other cities in our series, San Diego has plenty of highly-rated schools, and two areas top different parts of our rankings. The area with the best combination of affordable rent and highly-rated schools is along I-8 to the west of La Mesa, while the neighborhoods with the highest-rated schools overall are found far to the north of town.

As well as identifying good parts of town to look, we will use average property rent and school ratings to identify individual properties throughout the area that are our picks to provide the best value for each grade level.

San Diego area neighborhoods with the best public schools

Viewing school ratings by neighborhood allows us to find the areas with superb overall schools, rather than just identifying one-off instances of an individually exemplary school. Unfortunately, it's crowded at the top, with a three-way tie for best neighborhood among 4S Ranch, Del Mar Heights and Carmel Valley.
