The long-awaited summer season might be halfway behind us, but there’s still plenty of time to scream for ice cream!
If those pre-manufactured pints of Rocky Road just won’t do, you can always opt for making a creamy concoction right in the comfort of your own apartment.
Sure, some methods will take longer than others, but they all yield that creamy, dreamy, custardy goodness that’ll keep you cool and satisfied until summer’s end. Check out these methods for making homemade ice cream in your apartment.
Those perfectly warm days when you enjoyed fresh ice cream on the back porch while grandma and grandpa swayed in their rocking chairs are long gone. But if you’re longing for a sense of nostalgia, the most basic method of making ice cream – complete with rock salt – is right up your alley. A classic barrel-style ice cream maker, either electric or hand-cranked, would make your grandparents proud. If you need a tasty suggestion, try this homemade fresh strawberry ice cream recipe we spotted over at Fork Knife Swoon. We’ve also got you covered if you’d like to take a stab at growing your own strawberries in your apartment!
If you’d rather opt for a more modern ice cream making method, a machine like one by Cuisinart will do all the work for you. Using the freezer bowl method, your device’s mixing bowl lives in the freezer so that it’s ready whenever that sweet craving presents itself. All you need to do is prepare an ice cream base, like classic vanilla, pour it into the bowl, turn on the machine and wait about 20 minutes for your summertime treat to be ready. If you want to get really fancy with your dessert making skills, you can skip the ice cream altogether and invest in a gelato or sorbet maker. Hazelnut gelato, anyone?
So maybe splurging on an elaborate ice cream maker isn’t in your budget and you prefer to do things by hand. You might want to try the bag method. Once you make your ice cream base, you put it into a quart-sized resealable bag. Then you fill a gallon-sized resealable bag with ice and rock salt. Next, put the little bag inside the big bag and shake it while it freezes (about 20-30 minutes). This agitation keeps the ice crystals small so the ice cream stays creamy – just how you like it. Side note: the upper body workout is an added benefit.
There’s one last method that might sound a little crazy, but it works. It's known as the Ice Cream Ball. This multicolored portable ice cream maker is convenient because it can be used anywhere – camping, picnics, in the office or anywhere else on the go. Pour ice and rock salt in one end and your ice cream base in the other end. Roll it around for 20 minutes and… voila!
