Chicago has more than 200 neighborhoods – each with its own distinct personality. Due to the unique qualities of each area in the city, we thought it would be interesting to take a look at each individual Chicago zip code to determine which types of businesses are most common in those specific neighborhoods.
The map below shows the types of businesses that are at least three times more popular in each Chicago zip code. The font size indicates how disproportionately common a business type is within a given zip code.
As a comparison, this is how the same area of Chicago breaks down by zip codes. We've also highlighted where you'll find downtown, O'Hare and Midway airports and Wrigley Field.
Chicago's most common businesses are mostly professional services likes doctors, lawyers and dentists. This is typical for most cities. Chicago also has more than 5,000 restaurants. To put that in perspective – that's roughly 5 restaurants for every school and 10 restaurants for every bar.
Different parts of the city tend to be popular for different types of cuisine.
The most popular cuisine in Chicago is American, followed by pizza, Mexican, delis and burgers. Compared to other cities, Chicago has an unusually high amount of restaurants specializing in fried chicken.
There are many fun things to do in Chicago. Combined, there are nearly 400 parks, museums and libraries within the city. In particular, many of Chicago's museums and libraries are located in the downtown area. However, many other parts of the city offer leisure activities, as well.
Different neighborhoods of Chicago cater to different types of shopping.
This article uses data from 65,000 business listings to characterize Chicago's zip codes as well as identify the areas with unique business, shopping, leisure and dining features that renters are seeking.
The business types listed on these maps are all at least two to three times more common in that specific zip code. Areas that are blank do not have a specific business type that is overwhelmingly prevalent.
