Anyone who's visited or lived in Atlanta knows how diverse the city's different neighborhoods can be. Due to the unique qualities of each area in the city, we thought it would be interesting to take a look at each individual Atlanta zip code to determine which types of businesses are most common in those specific neighborhoods.
The map below shows the types of businesses that are at least three times more popular in each Atlanta zip code. The font size indicates how disproportionately common a business type is within a given zip code.
It's no surprise that restaurants account for the most common businesses in Atlanta (as you might expect in any large city). They are followed not so closely by beauty salons and churches. At close to 1,000 beauty salons, there are more than four salons for every grocery store throughout Atlanta.
The zip codes directly north and east of Downtown Atlanta are the places to be for eating, drinking and going out. The neighborhoods in this part of the city are packed with restaurants, bars and coffee shops.
If you're looking to dance the night away or belt out some karaoke, you'll want to travel northwest of the downtown area, where you can find any number of clubs to suit your style.
For your more sophisticated adventures, the west side will be your go-to spot for museums and art galleries. There are dozens of each where you can enjoy the work of local artists, see world-famous exhibits and participate in interactive installations.
No single neighborhood dominates the Atlanta restaurant scene (although the neighborhoods along Buford Highway might debate that). However, “American" is overwhelmingly the most popular type of cuisine, followed by delis, pizza, New American, burgers and Mexican.
Different parts of Atlanta cater to different types of shopping.
Businesses that cater to families exist throughout Atlanta, however they're particularly prevalent in the southern half of the city. This area has many schools, childcare providers and youth organizations.
This article uses data from 35,000 business listings to characterize Atlanta's neighborhoods as well as identify the areas with unique business, shopping, entertainment and family features that renters are seeking.
The business types listed on these maps are all at least three times as common in each specific zip code with an Atlanta mailing address. Areas that are blank do not have a specific business type that is overwhelmingly prevalent.
