CUW was originally founded as a religious institution to prepare young men to participate in the Lutheran Ministry. Classes were first held in the basement of the Trinity Lutheran Church in Milwaukee. Since these early days, the school has expanded its academic mission to include a broader array of subject areas, including most typical offerings of liberal arts universities. Today, business classes are the most popular, with more than 40 percent of students choosing to go into this field. However, CUW does still offer degrees in Theology and Religious Vocations. Students can expect to receive plenty of personal attention from their professors, as there is a student to faculty ratio of 12 to 1. The majority of classes are taught by professors, as opposed to teacher's assistants.
