Concordia University Wisconsin, WI

Concordia University Wisconsin, originally founded in 1881, offers students a chance to engage in unique coursework while receiving plenty of individual attention from faculty members. Located right on banks of Lake Michigan and just 20 minutes outside of Milwaukee, the campus offers something to students with many different interests. Student housing places students in close proximity to numerous recreational destinations. Each year, more than 4,300 students call the campus home.

CUW was originally founded as a religious institution to prepare young men to participate in the Lutheran Ministry. Classes were first held in the basement of the Trinity Lutheran Church in Milwaukee. Since these early days, the school has expanded its academic mission to include a broader array of subject areas, including most typical offerings of liberal arts universities. Today, business classes are the most popular, with more than 40 percent of students choosing to go into this field. However, CUW does still offer degrees in Theology and Religious Vocations. Students can expect to receive plenty of personal attention from their professors, as there is a student to faculty ratio of 12 to 1. The majority of classes are taught by professors, as opposed to teacher's assistants.

University housing offers students a chance to live in attractive buildings located a short walk from Lake Michigan. Still, about 63 percent of students choose to live in off campus apartments. The city of Mequon is mostly a suburban area that offers a number of natural attractions, including the Shoreland Nature Preserve and the River Forest Nature Preserve. For individuals who are looking to live in a more urban setting, the city of Milwaukee is less than a half hour's drive away, which may open up the student apartments of this city to CUW students.
