Cardinal Stritch University, WI

Cardinal Stritch University, which was originally founded by the Sisters of St. Francis of Assis in 1937, maintains its Catholic identity today while reaching out to students of all faiths and backgrounds. Today, it claims to be the largest Franciscan institution of higher learning in North America and is the only one to grant doctoral degrees. Located just miles from downtown Milwaukee, the school gives students the opportunity to look for off campus apartments in a number of neighborhoods in the city. Newcomers to the school will be challenged academically, as CSU places a strong emphasis on encouraging rigorous coursework.

Incoming students at CSU choose majors in one of four academic areas, which include Arts and Science, Business and Management, Education and Leadership, and Nursing. Education programs at the school have earned a reputation for innovation, as CSU was the first university in the region to offer master's degrees in reading and special education. Students in the nursing program can earn degrees from ADNs through MSNs and everything in between. Classes in the program tend to be smaller than at most other colleges, so students can expect plenty of one-on-one attention.

CSU reaches out to a diverse group of students, including older individuals and those transitioning from other schools. As such, the majority of students decide to forgo university housing in favor of seeking off campus living opportunities. The location of the campus is conducive to living off campus, as the main university buildings are located just under eight miles north of downtown Milwaukee. With many urban neighborhoods between the two areas, students are sure to find a college apartment that meets their needs.
