Alverno College, a historically all-female college originally founded in 1887, maintains its mission of giving young women a well-rounded educational foundation that is informed by the teachings of the Catholic Church. Student living gives newcomers to the area a chance to sample the many desirable neighborhoods of the Milwaukee metropolitan region. Most student housing is located in the neighborhood of Southgate. Students can expect to earn a high-quality education, as the college has developed a reputation for offering rigorous classes.

AC was ranked in 2011 by U.S. News and World Report as the top school in the Midwest in the "Strong Commitment to Education" category. The U.S. secretary of education Arne Duncan also recently referred to the school as a "shining star" for its rigorous coursework. In particular, Duncan pointed out the high quality of Alverno's teacher training program. Upwards of 85 percent of graduates from this program are still working as teachers five years after completing their degree. Aside from education, healthcare and business programs are extremely popular at the school.

University housing is relatively limited, and for this reason, more than 90 percent of students at Alverno decide to look for off campus living opportunities. This is typically no problem, as the many neighborhoods of Milwaukee offer numerous student apartments. The campus is located just six miles from the downtown area, which means that students can look for apartments just about anywhere in the city. Those looking for a more urban environment may prefer the East Town neighborhood, while those who are interested in living closer to the campus may opt for the West Milwaukee neighborhood.

What Renters Like and Dislike About Alverno College

Quietness. Hearing the children play. Theres a lot of good businesses out there. My favorite place is probably foosacklys its genuine.

The cost of rent is very affordable. It is also close to a grocery store and a dollar general which is also a plus.

Everyone is very friendly and helpful. There are many local and chain businesses right up the road. We have a nice park to take the kids to as well.

It's in the woods. Neighbor's are spread out. You have too go a Lon way too get any where. I hate where I live. Johnny is the only thing I can think of.
