Salem International University (SIU) is a small, private institution located in the city of Salem, West Virginia. It was originally founded by the Seventh Day Baptist Church in 1888, where teachers and nurses received education. In the ensuing century, the school continued to expand in size and scope, soon offering several bachelor's degree programs in the liberal arts. In 1989, it formed an alliance with Teikyo University in Tokyo, Japan, which drastically changed the direction the school was heading. Today, SIU focuses primarily on international students. Although its relationship with Teikyo has since come to an end, the school continues to create a unique atmosphere for any student living in the area.
SIU's stated mission is "to prepare global citizens with broad knowledge, marketable professional skills and the ability to make decisions with integrity and an international perspective." It offers a number of degree programs in a wide variety of fields, including information technology, nursing, business administration and criminal justice. Non-traditional students will be pleased to know that the school's courses are delivered in a month-long format, which means you can earn a degree much faster than at other universities. There are several classes offered online, which is great for those living in an off campus apartment.
Even if you live in university housing, however, you'll have no problem staying engaged with your friends. The city of Salem is full of wonderful bars and tasty restaurants that are worth checking out. And with quick access to train or bus, you'll have no problem exploring all that West Virginia has to offer. Lovers of the outdoors will have the opportunity to enjoy any number of activities when the weather is nice.
