Virginia Union University, located in Richmond, Virginia, is a historically black university formed in 1899 by the merger of the Richmond Theological Institute and Wayland Seminary, both of which were founded by the American Baptist Home Mission Society. Student living at VUU was established to give newly emancipated freedmen the opportunity for education in a religious environment. The university maintains its embrace of Christian principles in its curriculum, but has also expanded into a comprehensive liberal arts institution with a wide variety of course and program offerings.
