All About

Living in Virginia Union University, VA

Virginia Union University, located in Richmond, Virginia, is a historically black university formed in 1899 by the merger of the Richmond Theological Institute and Wayland Seminary, both of which were founded by the American Baptist Home Mission Society. Student living at VUU was established to give newly emancipated freedmen the opportunity for education in a religious environment. The university maintains its embrace of Christian principles in its curriculum, but has also expanded into a comprehensive liberal arts institution with a wide variety of course and program offerings. Virginia Union University students are welcomed to a campus on Richmond's North Side, where they may find on campus student housing or a university apartment. This neighborhood is located about one mile north of downtown Richmond and the James River, and includes several popular parks, shopping centers and gardens.

The university offers both undergraduate liberal arts programs and graduate education in Christian Ministries. Students may enroll in the Sydney Lewis School of Business, Syphax School of Education, Psychology and Interdisciplinary Studies, School of Humanities and Social Sciences or the School of Mathematics, Science and Technology. According to the Virginia Union University mission statement the goal of student living is to "provide a nurturing intellectually challenging and spiritually enriching environment for learning, empower students to develop strong moral values for success and develop scholars, leaders and lifelong learners of a global society."

The student lifestyle at VUU is often enhanced by the resources of Richmond, Virginia's capital city, and the possibility to rent off campus housing. The North Side, where VUU is located, is home to the Virginia Center Commons shopping mall, Joseph Bryan Park, the Richmond International Raceway and the Lewis Ginter Botanical Garden. In addition, may university apartments are located near North Lombardy Street, which runs adjacent to campus, and offers many of the most popular eateries and student hangouts.
