All about

Virginia State University, VA

Virginia State University, nestled into a crook of the Appomattox River in eastern Virginia, was established in 1882 as the Virginia Normal and Collegiate Institute, designed to educate emancipated freedmen and produce teachers for the region. The historically black university has continued to expand throughout the years, offering a wider range of academic disciplines, and accepting its first Ph.D. candidates in 2003. Student living at Virginia State University is centered in Petersburg, Virginia, a historic city of about 32,000 residents with notable architecture and community theater programs. Much of student housing is located north of downtown Petersburg in the Ettrick neighborhood, a small but lively community that hosts several popular annual events. Students at VSU are given several residence options, ranging from on-campus dormitories to off campus housing and university apartments.

The university divides its academic programs into six schools: the School of Agriculture, School of Business, School of Engineering, Science and Technology, School of Liberal Arts and Education, School of Individualized Studies, and the School of Graduate Studies. Virginia State University offers more than 30 undergraduate majors, about a dozen master's programs, and a doctoral degree program in Educational Administration and Supervision. Concentrations comprise a wide variety of disciplines, including Agriculture, Biology, Music, Economics, Criminal Justice and Sports Management.

Most student housing sits atop the university's rolling landscape, overlooking the Appomattox River and the city of Petersburg. An off campus apartment in the Ettrick area puts students in contact with an active Historical Society that gathers for events like "Burns Night," featuring a traditional haggis dinner that honors the Scottish poet Robert Burns, and Heritage Day, observed with pipe and drum bands, food, and Civil War reenactments. Passing into Petersburg, students gain access to the Generals, a baseball team that entertains summer crowds in the local collegiate league.
