The University of Mary Washington is a public, liberal arts college located in the northern Virginia city of Fredericksburg, about 50 miles south of Washington, D.C. The institution was founded as a normal school in 1908, and was part of the University of Virginia until 1972, when it began offering student living independently. In recent years, UMW has continued to mature and expand, becoming an accredited university in 2004, and expanding into campuses in Stafford County and in Dahlgren, Virginia. Within the past several years, Mary Washington has invested in student living, constructing the Carmen Culpeper Chappell ‘59 Centennial Campanile, the 3,000-seat Anderson Center, and additional student housing. Today, about 4,300 undergraduates and nearly 900 postgraduates enroll at the University of Mary Washington, and reside on campus, or in a university apartment nearby.
In addition to conferring bachelor’s degrees in 24 undergraduate majors, UMW offers graduate students opportunities to earn an MBA, M.Ed, MSMIS, MBA-MSMIS dual degree, BPS, or several graduate-level certificates. Student living is divided into the College of Arts and Sciences, the College of Business, the College of Education and the Dahlgren Center for Education and Research. The university has earned a top-tier academic reputation, and in 2010, was listed as the best Master’s University in the South, in the U.S. News and World Report’s rankings.
The university’s main campus in Fredericksburg is located on Marye’s Heights, a steep hill that played a role in the 1862 Civil War Battle of Fredericksburg. The area is full of historic landmarks, including the university president’s official residence, which served as a field hospital during the battle. Off campus housing in this area also puts students in contact with the region’s contemporary culture, which is felt in the parks and downtown avenues that are located just to the east of the university.
