Shenandoah University, VA

Shenandoah University is a private institution located in northern Virginia city of Winchester, where it moved in 1960, after operating as a seminary, junior college and conservatory in Dayton, Virginia, since 1875. Shenandoah received university status in 1991, and its reputation as one of the best academic institutions in the South continues to draw young learners to student living. The school has spread into three primary campuses: a main Winchester campus near Interstate 81, the Health Professions campus located near the Winchester Medical Center, and the Northern Virginia Campus, located in the town of Leesburg. Satellite facilities are also located throughout Winchester, and student housing is available near each of these learning centers. A university apartment in Winchester brings students to a city that has distinguished itself with its annual festivals, classic southern restaurants and sports scene.

Currently nearly 3,800 students enroll at Shenandoah University and take advantage of the area’s student housing. Students gain access to more than ninety academic programs that are offered through six schools: the College of Arts and Sciences, the School of Business, the Shenandoah Conservatory, the School of Pharmacy, the School of Health Professions, and the School of Education and Human Development. According to the U.S. News and World Report’s 2012 rankings, Shenandoah University is listed as 27th in the Regional Universities (South) category.

Students with a university apartment join a community that supports and sponsors public events throughout the year. Winchester hosts the annual Shenandoah Apple Blossom Festival, which brings a carnival, parades, crafts dances and parties to the town in the first weekend of May. Throughout the spring and summer, the Winchester Royals play in the Valley Baseball League, and when there are no events on the calendar, students can enjoy the town’s classic restaurants, such as the Triangle Diner on West Gerrard Street.
