Randolph-Macon College, the oldest Methodist institution of higher learning in the U.S., was founded in 1830 in southern Virginia, and has since moved to the town of Ashland, a suburb of the commonwealth’s capital in Richmond. Student living at Randolph-Macon has been co-educational since 1971, and the college has a history of innovation in the academic realm. According to a history of the school by James Scanlon, the institution was among the first liberal arts schools to offer a computer science program, and among the first colleges in the South to develop English and biology programs as distinct fields of study.
Today, the school enrolls more than 1,200 students, exclusively undergraduates, who reside in student housing both on campus and in the Ashland community. Ashland is a tranquil town in central Virginia with fewer than 7,000 residents. Off campus housing near Randolph-Macon college is typically found near downtown restaurants, shopping centers, entertainment venues, and a convenient Amtrak station. This region is also used to host the town’s annual events.
Students at Randolph-Macon College may choose among 31 majors and 40 minors including areas such as political science, international relations, computer science, business, biology, psychology and education. The school confers Bachelor’s of Arts and Bachelor’s of Science degrees though 40 unique academic departments.
In recent years, the college has expanded, adding a new baseball field and football stadium, renovating the McGraw-Page Library and Brown Campus Center, and adding new on-campus student housing. Despite these additions, many students still opt to live in a college apartment. Off campus housing in Ashville places students near the North Ashland Plaza Shopping Center, the Ashland Firehouse Theater, and the downtown venue for the annual Strawberry Fair that takes place each June, featuring performers, music, vendors and the Little Miss and Little Mister Strawberry Pageant.
