Randolph College, founded in 1891 as Randolph-Macon Women’s College, has recently turned a new page in its history, becoming coeducational for the 2007-2008 academic year. The private, liberal arts college brings student living to Lynchburg, Virginia, a city of about 75,000 residents, nestled in the foothills of the Blue Ridge Mountains, and along the banks of the James River. Located a mile or so north of downtown Lynchburg, known as “The City of Seven Hills,” the Randolph College campus lies adjacent to an expansive riverside area, where attractive student housing can be found. The city is known for both the beauty of its rugged terrain, and its historical attractions, which date back to the days of Thomas Jefferson and Patrick Henry. Off campus housing is available near these storied landmarks, and in the neighborhoods that surround the Randolph College campus.
Students at Randolph are able to enroll in any of 29 majors, 30 minors, and undergraduate pre-professional programs in law, medicine, veterinary medicine, engineering and teaching. Most of the approximately 500 students who live in Randolph College student housing work toward Bachelor’s of Arts, Bachelor’s of Science or Bachelor of Fine Arts degrees, however, a handful of graduate students earn a Master’s of Arts in Teaching or in Education. Student living at the college also benefits from the on-campus Maier Museum of Art, a nationally recognized facility that features works by 19th and 20th century American artists, and a traditional “rivalry” between students graduating in even years and those graduating in odd years.
Students who elect to rent a college apartment near Randolph typically join an intimate community near campus along the main stretch of Rivermont Avenue. While ample bus lines provide transportation around the city, those with off campus housing are within walking distance of the James River and popular restaurants like Mangia and the Cavalier Store.
