Radford University, VA

Radford University, which takes its name from its hometown of Radford, Virginia, is one of the commonwealth’s eight institutions of higher learning that grants doctoral degrees among its offerings. The university was founded as a women’s college in 1910, seeking to produce local teachers from its program in “rural arts.” Today, the coeducational university’s expanded curriculum emphasizes the liberal arts, business and teacher education as key components of student living.

Radford University is located in the southwestern branch of Virginia, in the Highlands between the Blue Ridge Mountains and Allegheny Mountains. The campus lies near a double bend in New River, and is just miles from Little River. Student housing among the appealing natural terrain of this area is available both on campus and in university apartments located throughout the town of about 16,400 residents.

For undergraduates, Radford University offers comprehensive curricula in more than 100 fields of study. Graduate programs, including an MFA and MBA, are offered through the College of Graduate and Extended Education. This division of the university offers 19 degree programs in fields including art, business, communication, counseling, criminal justice, education, English, music, nursing, occupational therapy and social work. The U.S. News and World Report has repeatedly ranked Radford in among the top 25 master’s level public universities in the South.

Currently, about 7,800 undergraduates and 1,000 postgraduates enroll at Radford University, though on-campus student housing in 15 residence halls only accommodates 3,150 students. Consequently, off campus housing is an appealing for many upperclassmen and graduate students. A university apartment near Radford’s Main Street puts students close to campus and within walking distance of New River, and restaurants including Canton, Macado’s and Tuscana Italiano’s.
