Old Dominion University, VA

Old Dominion University, located in Norfolk, Virginia, has been a source of education and student living in the region since its establishment in 1930, when it was founded as a division of the College of William and Mary. Today, the independent university attracts scholars of a variety of ages and backgrounds to nearby student housing in Virginia's second-largest city. Norfolk is bordered to the north by the Chesapeake Bay and to the west by the Elizabeth River, providing several scenic neighborhoods for off campus housing and university apartments.

The liberal arts school has grown extensively in recent years, beginning in 2001 with the construction of the Ted Constant Convocation Center. Within the past decade, Old Dominion University has also added a student recreation center, the University Village, and significantly expanded student housing, with six new residential buildings. Today, about 18,500 undergraduates and more than 6,000 graduate students reside in these dormitories, apartments and off campus housing near Old Dominion University.

Those who attend the university may work toward any of 70 bachelor's degrees offered in the liberal arts, science, technology and professional industries. Graduate students have access to 60 master's and 35 doctoral degree programs.

The city is home to several major performing arts companies, a wide range of museums, and is the site of many parades and festivals in downtown Town Pointe Park. Most famous is the Chrysler Museum of Art, which is located in the Ghent district.
