Lynchburg College is a private, liberal arts institution nestled into the foothills of the Blue Ridge Mountains in central Virginia. The school was founded in 1903 with an affiliation to the Christian Church Disciples of Christ, which persists to the present day. Opening with 11 faculty members and 55 students, the college has grown to about 160 full-time faculty and about 2,800 students, who reside in student housing both on campus and throughout the region. Student living is centered on a wooded campus in Lynchburg, Virginia, a city that is home to about 75,000 residents. The majority of students live on campus or in a college apartment in the surrounding neighborhood. The community supports the student lifestyle with many options for entertainment and recreation, including hiking routes to many of the area's natural attractions, professional sports teams and historic landmarks.
Currently, the liberal arts college offers 39 undergraduate majors and 49 minors, in addition to two dual-degree programs. Postgraduates and Lynchburg College may work toward a Master's of Arts, Master's of Business Administration, Master's of Education or Master's of Science in Nursing degree, as well as doctoral degrees in Physical Therapy and Educational Leadership. For its academic strengths, the institution has made its way on the Princeton Review's list of the best 368 colleges in the nation, and is also included in the educational guides, Colleges That Change Lives and The Templeton Guide: Colleges That Encourage Character.
Off campus housing is an exciting option for many Lynchburg College students, given the school's location near the Blue Ridge Mountains. Student housing is located near attractions such as Poplar Forest, which was a retreat home for Thomas Jefferson, the Peaks of Otter, which overlook the town, and Crabtree Falls, the longest waterfall east of the Mississippi River. Other hiking areas include Sharp Top, Candlers Mountain, Flat Top, the Blackwater Creek Natural Area, Holliday Lake, and Apple Orchard Trail.
