J. Sargeant Reynolds Community College was founded in Richmond, Virginia, in 1972, and expanded quickly to become the third largest institution in the Virginia Community College System. Now operating three major campuses and five off-campus learning centers, JSRCC has extended student living to residents of Richmond, Goochland County, Hanover County, Henrico County, Louisa County and Powhatan County. With such a wide service area, the institution enrolls approximately 17,600 students each year, who seek certificates, two-year degrees, or university transfer programs. Most students reside in off campus housing as they matriculate, and the majority of college apartments are located near the Downtown or Parham Road Campuses in Richmond, or the Western Campus, in Goochland, Virginia. Richmond, capital city of the commonwealth, provides an assortment of attractive neighborhoods, buttressed by the museums, monuments and arts centers that engage the city's 204,000 residents.

Student living at J. Sargeant Reynolds Community College allows students to pursue their academic interests through six schools: the School of Arts, Humanities and Social Sciences, the School of Business, the School of Culinary Arts, Tourism and Hospitality, the School of Engineering, the School of Mathematics and Science, and the School of Nursing and Allied Health. JSRCC offers 34 two-year professional training programs, 60 career studies certificates, and five transfer programs to four-year colleges or universities. According to the school's mission statement, the college "provides access to education that develops individuals for employment and career advancement, prepares students for successful transfer to colleges and universities, promotes personal enrichment and lifelong learning, and builds a skilled workforce that contributes to regional economic development.
