Hampton University, VA

Hampton University is a historically black university located in the Chesapeake area in southwestern Virginia. Like many HBCUs in this area, Hampton has a long history of educating minority students, dating back to the civil war. Student living at the university officially began in 1868, three years after the war had ended. The institution was founded by black and white leaders of the American Missionary Association, to provide education to freed slaves, in what was then known as the Hampton Agricultural and Industrial School. Soon, the school tailored its courses to the Native American population as well, and produced such famous alumni as Dr. Booker T. Washington, who would carry on the spirit of equality at the center of the school’s philosophy. Today, student housing is available surrounding the university in Hampton, Virginia. The historic town includes several notable landmarks and plenty of off campus housing to complement and sustain student living.

The Hampton University campus faces south, across the harbor and numerous bays in the Hampton Roads area. It was founded in an area known as “Little Scotland,” where many freed slaves sought refuge in the mid and late 1800s. Today, those in Hampton University student housing may pursue a degree conferred by one of the university’s 10 schools and colleges. These include the College of Education and Continuing Studies, the College of Virginia Beach, the Graduate College, School of Liberal Arts, School of Business, School of Engineering, School of Nusing, School of Pharmacy, School of Science and School of Journalism and Communications.

Students who live in off campus housing gain access to neighborhoods that include such a list of national historic landmarks. Hampton University borders the Hampton River, where students can find slices of history, such as Mansion House plantation, Virginia Hall, Wigwam, and the Marquand Memorial Chapel.
