Following a proposition from the Staked Plains Baptist Association in 1906, Wayland Baptist University (WBU) first opened its doors in 1910, despite unfinished campus construction. The school was originally known as Wayland Literary and Technical Institute, changing its name to Wayland Baptist College in 1910 and earning university status in 1981. Within the High Plains region of Texas, Wayland Baptist University remains the oldest operating institution of higher education. WBU currently features 14 campuses throughout five cities in Texas, six states and a foreign campus in Kenya.
WBU's mission states that it "exists to educate students in an academically challenging, learning-focused and distinctively Christian environment for professional success and service to God and humankind.
