Initially founded in 1971 as Tyler State College, the University of Texas at Tyler has undergone many transformations throughout its history. In 1975, the school was renamed Texas Eastern University before joining the University of Texas System four years later. UT Tyler operated as a senior level transfer college for many years - only providing courses for undergraduate juniors and seniors. However, in 1997 the school shifted its academic programs to include freshman and sophomore education.
UT Tyler's mission states that it is "committed to providing a setting for free inquiry and expects excellence in teaching, research, artistic performances and professional public service provided by its faculty, staff and students."
