Located at the University of Chicago's (UC) main campus in Hyde Park, Chicago, the Pritzker School of Medicine (PSM) has been operating as the medical degree granting unit of UC since 1927. The school was renamed after the Pritzker family in 1968, owners of the Hyatt hotels, who were avid contributors to the university. The school was ranked 12th in the nation for medical research universities by U.S. News & World Report in 2012. The school has also been affiliated with 11 Nobel Prize winners in the field of Physiology or Medicine.
Students living in student housing or an off campus apartment at PSM have access to the school's impressive academic curriculum as part of UC's Biological Sciences Division. Emphasizing the Pritzker Initiative since 2005, the school combines principles of "active learning … integration among disciplines when possible and appropriate … [and] a requirement for a scholarly project for all medical students." PSM's research efforts have also distinguished the school as a leader in the fields of AIDS research, primary care and women's health. Many students at the school pursue combined degrees associated with UC's School of Social Service Administration or the Booth School of Business.
Student living and university living at PSM place students within close proximity of Chicago's various cultural, educational, recreational and commercial landmarks like Willis Tower, Grant Park, Wrigley Field, the Loop, Lake Michigan and the Field Museum. Students also have access to the city's other institutions of higher education.
