The University of Houston-Clear Lake was established in Pasadena, Texas in 1971, a direct consequence of the need to offer more physics, math and engineering programs to employees of the NASA Manned Spacecraft Center, which landed in the area years earlier. Since then, the university has slowing developed into a more traditional institution, which it aims to complete by offering freshman- and sophomore-level for the first time by 2014. The school's unique student living experience is centered beside a nature preserve near the community of Clear Lake City, as well as at a satellite campus in Pearland. From off campus housing near the preserve, students may see the area's wild turkeys, bobcats and whitetail deer creep through the community.

More than 8,000 students now enroll at the University of Houston-Clear Water and reside in student housing. Because UHCL is an upper-level university, most students have earned an associates degree or obtained at least 54 semester hours at a community college prior to enrolling. Once enrolled, students are prepared to achieve any of 40 bachelors, 44 masters or one doctoral degree, organized through schools of Business, Human Sciences and Humanities, Science and Computer Engineering and Education.

By renting a university apartment near UHCL, students gain access to a community that is just miles from downtown Houston, and even closer to the shores of Trinity Bay and the Gulf of Mexico. The school's location is one of its best attributes, and many students elect to take advantage by renting off campus housing in their preferred neighborhood.
