Texas Southern University, TX

Texas Southern University, perhaps better known as TSU, is one of the largest and most comprehensive historically black universities in the U.S. When the institution was founded in 1947, it was declared the first state university in Houston. While 85 percent of the student body is African American, applicants of all races are invited to pursue student living at TSU while earning a degree. Student housing near the Texas Southern University offers students the chance to live in an exciting city and receive an education that benefits from a list of academic resources that is still expanding. Today, about 10,000 students enroll at TSU and make their residence in a university apartment or dormitory.

Those studying at TSU benefit from an expansive network of ten schools and colleges that support a variety of academic and research programs, including several new offerings. In 2010, the university began to offer classes in conjunction with Lone Star College in northwest Houston, and due to a partnership with the Houston Public Library, began offering fine arts classes as well as theater and dance performances in the city’s Deluxe Theater. In addition, student living at TSU extends beyond the classroom, to areas like the University Mesuem, which features a variety of historical and contemporary art exhibits.

Off campus housing in the area places students in an area that supports student living. The TSU campus is adjacent to the University of Houston, and both universities benefit from the nearby MacGregor Park and the waterways that weave through the area.
