Located in Seguin, Texas between the major urban centers of San Antonio and Austin, Texas Lutheran University (TLU) was established in 1891 and is affiliated with the Evangelical Lutheran Church in America. The university was originally located in Brenham and was transferred to Seguin in 1912. The school was first known as an academy of the First German Evangelical Lutheran Synod in Texas, but was renamed Texas Lutheran College in 1930 after merging with Trinity College and Clifton College. In 1996, the school achieved university status.
TLU's mission states that it is "a community of learning and a community of faith..." stressing "the liberating potential of the disciplined pursuit of academic excellence within the context of academic freedom..." along with "the liberating power of gospel as applied to the whole of human life."
