Originally founded in 1894 by the Christian Methodist Episcopal Church, Texas College began with the purpose of providing quality higher education to young African Americans in Texas. Holding its first class in a tiny, four-room building, Texas College has grown into a premier academic institution and a historically black college.
Texas College's stated mission is to "ensure that the student body experiences balanced, intellectual, psychological, social and spiritual development, aimed at enabling them to become active productive members of society where they live and work." The college achieves this mission through the core values of academic excellence, integrity, perseverance, social responsibility, tolerance and community service.
Those living in student housing or an off campus apartment at Texas College have access to the school's outstanding academic programs and fields of study. Students may pursue a bachelor's degree in twelve unique programs such as religion, biology, business administration, mathematics, social work, liberal studies, English, criminal justice, computer science, sociology, music, and interdisciplinary studies. The school also offers associate's degrees in early childhood education and general studies.
Student living and university living revolve around a variety of traditional campus student activities and organizations. The Texas College Steers and Lady Steers athletic programs compete in NAIA in sports like baseball, softball, football, basketball, track and volleyball.
