Richland College is the largest institution of the Dallas Count Community College District’s seven affiliated schools. Established in 1972, the school offers student living in Dallas’ Lake Highlands area, near the border with Richardson and Garland, Texas. By offering academic programs in a wide variety of fields, Richardson has seen its enrollment grow to about 14,000 students, many of whom make their residence in local student housing while taking courses. The campus, located on the old Jackson farm, invites students to a beautiful rural area of the state, that sits less than 10 miles northeast of downtown Dallas.
In its rather short history, Richmond has earned distinction as a top-performing community college. Students are able to earn a wide variety of certificates and associates degrees with specializations in unique disciplines such as Multimedia, Peace Studies and Photography. Richmond College confers degrees through five distinct schools that together offer programs in world languages, math and science, healthcare, fine and performing arts, education, engineering, business and technology. In 2005, Richmond became the first community college to receive the Malcolm Baldrige National Quality Award.
As with most community college students, Richmond students often commute to classes from off campus housing in the area. A college apartment in the Lake Highlands area, positions students among the preserved beauty of the region, highlighted by Thunderduck Brook, which flows through campus. Students can also find nearby attractions like Restland Memorial Park, and can easily access the excitement of downtown Dallas.
