Established in 1872, Paul Quinn College holds the distinction of being the oldest historically black college west of the Mississippi River. In its early days, the institution was based in Austin, Texas, where a group African Methodist Episcopal preachers taught freed slaves skills like blacksmithing, carpentry and saddle work. Today, student living at Paul Quinn College takes place in southern Dallas, where students are able to enjoy the excitement of urban living while working toward a degree designed to prepare them for rewarding work after graduation. Student housing in this section of Dallas is set in a calm environment, ideal for studying, but just miles from the city's downtown district.
Academically, Paul Quinn College has bolstered its reputation in recent years, underscored by its newly-imposed business casual dress code. The college confers Bachelor of Science degrees through the Department of General Education, Department of Business and Legal Studies and Department of Education. Beginning in the fall of 2012, the institution will offer five additional programs, including degrees in the Liberal Arts, Religious Studies, Health and Wellness and Social Entrepreneurship and a certificate program in Fundraising and Philanthropy.
The school presents an exciting opportunity to study in Dallas, which some students capitalize upon by renting off campus housing. A Paul Quinn College apartment places students in convenient proximity to the campus, but adds a measure of independence as students explore the city. Student housing is available near attractions such as Lemmon Lake and Alta Mesa Park.
