Lamar University, TX

Originally founded as South Park Junior College in 1923, Lamar University has undergone a number of organizational and name changes over the years. The institution changed its name to Lamar College in 1932 in respect to Mirabeau B. Lamar, the second president of the former Republic of Texas who was known as the "Father of Education" within the state. In 1951, the college changed once again to the Lamar State College of Technology before becoming Lamar University in 1971. Quickly becoming a major institution of higher education in Texas, the school joined the Texas State University System in 1995.

Lamar's mission states that it is "a comprehensive public institution educating a diverse student body, preparing students for leadership and lifelong learning in a multicultural world and enhancing the future of Southeast Texas, the state, the nation and the world through teaching, research and creative activity and service."

Those living in student housing or an off campus apartment at Lamar have access to the school's exceptional academic programs and fields of study. Students may enroll in the College of Arts and Sciences, College of Business, College of Engineering, College of Education and Human Development and College of Fine Arts and Communication.

Student living and university living revolve around a variety of traditional campus student organizations. The school's athletic programs, known as the Cardinals, compete in the NCAA's Division I in men's and women's sports such as basketball, golf, tennis, volleyball, football, baseball and cross country.
