In 1935, the residents of Galveston, Texas voted in favor of creating a Galveston Junior College District, however, the community struggled to secure tax funds for the new school district and plans halted that next year. It wasn't until 1966 that community leaders were able to approve funding for the junior college. Galveston College finally opened its doors in 1967 - more than 30 years after the initial proposal was created. Today, Galveston College is home to about 2,400 students and 5,000 continuing education participants.
