East Texas Baptist University (ETBU) was originally founded in 1912 as the College of Marshall on the former Van Zandt Plantation in Marshall, Texas. The school first opened its doors in 1917 as a junior college and operated as such until 1944, when it became East Texas Baptist College. ETBU has remained affiliated with the Baptist General Convention of Texas since its founding.
ETBU's mission states that its "purpose is the development of intellectual inquiry, social consciousness, wellness, skills for a contemporary society, global awareness and Christian characters" in order to "prepare students to accept the obligations and opportunities to serve humanity and the Kingdom of God."
