Southern College of Optometry, located in Memphis, Tennessee, is one of just 20 advanced schools of optometry in the U.S. The institution was founded in 1932 and has become one of the foremost schools of its type in the country, with about 98 percent of graduates passing the the National Board Examinations in recent years. Student living is set on a small campus is downtown Memphis, about a mile east of the Mississippi River and a mile west of Overton Park. Since enrollment is limited to postgraduates, most students elect to live in off campus housing in the area, allowing them convenient access to the Southern College of Optometry campus and permitting them to navigate Memphis with ease. Academically, student living at SCO is dedicated to the study of optometry, including refractive eye examinations, the fitting of corrective lenses, vision therapy, and the diagnosis and treatment of ocular diseases. The school operates the on-campus Eye Center, which opened in 2002 and and serves up to 60,000 patients each year, making it one of the largest facilities of its kind in the U.S. The center covers service areas, including adult and pediatric primary care, vision therapy and rehabilitation services, cornea and contact lens service and the technology center. After completing the 4-year program, all Southern College of Optometry students receive a Doctor of Optometry degree.
The comfortable Memphis neighborhood in which SCO is settled makes a college apartment an attractive option. The campus is around the corner from the historic Crump Stadium, as well as several popular dining options, which include Bhan Thai, and the Buccaneer Lounge, which doubles as a music venue for rock bands.
