Southern Adventist University, the first Adventist school to be founded in the southern U.S., is located in a small town in southeastern Tennessee. Founded as the Graysville Academy in 1892, the institution has undergone a gradual transition to become the master's degree-granting university that exists today. Each year, about 3,000 students, both postgraduate and undergraduate, move to Collegedale, Tennessee, to participate in student living at Southern Adventist. The campus is set in a rural environment in the Tennessee River Valley. Collegedale, a town of just over 8,000 residents supports the student lifestyle with its tranquil setting, convenient shopping centers and student housing for rent. Students who reside on campus typically stay in single-sex dorms, though off-campus housing is also available in the surrounding neighborhood.
The university has a reputation as one of the most conservative Seventh-day Adventist schools in the nation, underscored by student living policies such as its ban of jewelry on campus and its strict observation of the Sabbath, during which students refrain from secular activities. Southern Adventist offers 81 undergraduate degrees and master's degrees in business, education, psychology, nursing, religion and social work. Degrees are conferred through the School of Nursing, Institute of Archaeology and School of Visual art and Design. The Institute of Archaeology is notable for offering an undergraduate degree in biblical archeology, one of two such programs in the country. Academically, the university is recognized as one of the top-tier institutions in the South by the U.S. News and World Report.
A university apartment in Collegedale allows students greater flexibility in organizing their lifestyle, and more options when deciding on a new home. The Southern Adventist University campus is located in a secluded area, down the road from Veteran's Memorial Park and the Robinson Corner Shopping Center.
