Memphis Theological Seminary, TN

Memphis Theological Seminary, renamed to reflect its location in Midtown Memphis, Tennessee, is an ecumenical school of theology with an affiliation with the Cumberland Presbyterian Church. The institution traces its pedagogical roots to 1852, when the church established a theological school at Cumberland University and a department at Bethel College. The Bethel branch became a seminary in 1922, and student living was transformed again in 1964, when the institution arrived in Memphis, at its current location. The campus is located on the corner of Union Avenue and East Parkway, across town from the Cumberland Presbyterian Center in Cordova, Tennessee. Student housing is available both on campus and in college apartments in the surrounding region, near the Christian Brothers University and the popular shops and restaurants along Poplar Avenue.

“The mission of Memphis Theological Seminary is to education and sustain men and women for ordained and lay Christian ministry in the church and the world through shaping and inspiring lives devoted to scholarship, piety and justice,” says the MTS website. This education takes the form of graduate programs that culminate with a Master of Divinity, Master of Arts in Religion and Doctor of Ministry degrees. A Program of Alternate Studies (PAS) is also offered.

MTS currently enrolls about 315 students, who represent 33 different religious affiliations. These students reside both on campus and in off campus housing in Midtown Memphis. A college apartment puts students a convenient distance from the Memphis Theological Seminary campus, and near a handful of attractions in the neighborhood. Points of interest in Midtown include Overton Park, which is comprised of the Memphis Brooks Museum of Art, the Memphis Zoo and the Memphis College of Art. In addition, the area is popular for its many bars and restaurants that feature live music. Alex’s Tavern, Bosco’s, Huey’s and Side Street are all hubs of the area’s nightlife.
