Johnson University, a private, coeducational college, is located in the upper Tennessee River Valley, on the banks of the French Broad River and just upstream from where the French Broad the Holston Rivers meet to form the Tennessee. This location, six miles southeast of the center of Knoxville, has been the site of student living since the school was founded in 1893. The institution was known as Johnson Bible College until 2011. Johnson University is distinguished as being the second oldest continuing Bible College in the U.S., and the oldest with an affiliation to the Christian Churches and Churches of Christ. Its enrollment has grown to nearly 900 students, a number which has nearly doubled over the past decade. The student body, the majority of whom are undergraduates, are invited to live in student housing on the Johnson University campus, or in a university apartment nearby.
Johnson University attends to students with a variety of academic and professional goals, offering associates, bachelor's and master's degrees. Undergraduates may choose from 12 majors, most of which prepare students for positions within the church or ministry. In addition, all undergraduates must major in Bible. Student living for master's degree candidates involves a concentration in either education, New Testament and Prereaching or Marriage and Family Therapy. Johnson also offers a Ph.D. in leadership studies.
Those who elect to live in off campus housing typically join the community on the periphery of Knoxville, Tennessee, a city of about 179,000 residents. The city, Tennessee's third-largest, plays host to dozens of events throughout the years, including the Knoxville Marathon, the Big Ears Festival, Boo at the Zoo, Knoxville Brewers' Jam, GreekFest and the Dogwood Arts Festival. While these events are easy to reach, most Johnson University apartments are located in a quieter part of the city, that gives students access to the hiking and jogging trans along the French Broad River.
