All about

Freed Hardeman University, TN

Freed-Hardeman University, a primarily undergraduate institution in western Tennessee, was founded as the Henderson Male Institute by members of the Churches of Christ in 1869. Several name and philosophy changes have produced the student living experience that today greets young scholars who enroll, though the university maintains an emphasis on Biblical studies and Christian teachings. Today, about 1,500 undergraduates and nearly 500 postgraduates attend Freed-Hardeman University, and reside in student housing in Henderson, Tennessee. Students may choose to live in single-sex dormitories or in a university apartment near the campus, which is located a short distance from town's center. Henderson is a community of about 5,700 residents, offering a spate of shops and establishments in its small downtown area. Off campus housing is available throughout the town, giving students additional options for the university experience.

The majority of students at FHU are undergraduates, who pursue any of 40 academic majors and minors. In addition, all full-time students are required to take at least one Bible class each semester and attend a daily chapel service. Graduate students may earn a master's degree in several areas, which include Biblical Studies, Business, Counseling and Education. In recent years, the U.S. News and World Report has ranked Freed-Hardeman as high as 39th among master's degree-granting universities in the South.

Off campus housing in Henderson invites students to experience a wider community as they study. The town is located about 40 miles northeast of Memphis, near the Pinson Mounds State Archaeological Area, which includes several prehistoric Native American habitation areas. Closer to campus, students with a university apartment can enjoy such local attributes as the Chickasaw Golf Club and Chickasaw State Park. Namely, student housing in Henderson allows students to find a living situation which best meets their needs as a student.
