Companion at Carter Mill

After living here for over a year, heres our comprehensive review of our experience with Companion. Hopefully this will help others PCSing to this area. We had a 3 bed, 2 bath apartment on the 3rd floor. Office staff: 5/5 Super friendly and helpful. Always answered our questions. Maintenance was always quick and easy. Very reasonable upon move-in and move-out. Very military friendly and understood our circumstances. Literally 0 complaints about the staff, we appreciated them. Apartment itself: 0/5 Super outdated and run down. Stairs leading up are disgusting and full of spiders and bugs. They power wash once a year, but should really be once a month. We always had spiders in our apartment and it was terrible. Stairs are creaky and loud. Apartment inside has little storage, and the bathrooms are super crammed. Blinds are flimsy and cheap. Walls are thin and you can hear neighbors. Overall feels like a cheap burner apartment. Amenities: 4/5 Washer dryer available, but we quickly bought our own. Pool was okay, although we rarely used it. Compactor worked out great. Dog waste stations came in handy. Used their small gym once or twice, but wouldnt rely on it. Overall not bad. Location: 5/5 Super close to Shaw AFB Sumter gate. In the better part of the neighborhood. Sumter itself: 0/5 Do not move here unless you legit have to for Shaw. We could not wait to get out of here ASAP. The town of Sumter is literal trash, and I felt incredibly unsafe. Wouldnt go out alone at night, or even during the day. Luckily Companion is in the nicer part of town, but still overall a sketchy area. Stores were awful, never really had a good food experience. Walmart was horrendous. Trashy people fighting in the middle of stores, moms screaming at their kids, straight up moldy food on shelves. I got asked for drug money in broad daylight several times. Homeless people galore. We went to Columbia every weekend to avoid Sumter. Overall: 3/5

Don't get dupe by the pictures...It is totally different. As you can see, the picture is more of the front office. The website picture is old too.When we arrive, the hallway in front of our room is dirty, cobwebs, cat or dog hair balls, the exit signs are broken, No lighting on where we have a rented extra storage room.The kids playground needs maintenance. The building needs maintenance. The steps are made of lumber so IT MAKES NOISE and Squeaks! Only one thrash bin.Average place. office is close on weekends. The answering phone does not even says who you calling to. Customer service not good, front lady texts while you talking to her (Sept2017). We got our keys and no direction given, same with your mailbox. You have to figure it yourself. The place has aged...No microwave included either. No mirror cabinet, so wife's stuff and mine were on the floor!.That is why there is no picture of the bath area. Go somewhere..its only a few minutes drive in the area.

I moved in a week ago. The apartment was freshly painted and clean. The air conditioner was broke because a part didn't come in before I moved in. The manager offered me window units or I could stay in the furnished model until the issue was resolved. I am very impressed with the professionalism of the staff here. They have all gone out of their way to resolve the issue. I would highly recommend this property to anyone looking for an apartment.

If I could give 0 stars I would. When we first moved in the apartment was in terrible shape. Stained counter tops, broken blinds, cracked showers, broke toilet seats & handles, cracked shelves in the refrigerator. The apartment was also filthy. The base boards had collected so much dust along with the cabinets. Now our kitchen has flooded twice. We've called someone out to fix it BOTH times & they did nothing. Our ceiling is leaking & everyday I walk into 2 huge puddles of cold "water", again was not fixed. Thankfully our lease is almost up, but to anyone looking into moving here, DONT.

The managers at Carter Mill have always been very professional, courteous, and willing to work with me on any issues that arise. Maintenance has always been prompt on the rare occasion it is needed, and the apartments have always been clean and presentable upon moving in.

I like the staff and most of the residents I have come in contact with however, I think there needs to be more staff to be able to keep up with the demands by the residents.
