Situated in Bristol, Rhode Island, is Roger Williams University, (RWU), a private institution which was originally founded in 1956. At the moment, the school boasts a student population of about 3,800 and about 850 graduate students. It offers 42 different liberal arts majors and five different professional schools. RWU is one of the only colleges in the United States which offers an undergraduate degree specifically in Marine Biology. It also boasts a school of architecture and the only law in Rhode Island. The majority of students live in university housing, though you can certainly live in an off campus apartment if you're looking to spend some time in the city.
RWU has also established a program in civil discourse, including the journal Reason and Respect, which is responsible for a number of well-known speakers making their way to the university. The likes of Salman Rushdie and Nobel Prize-winner David Trimble have spoken at RWU in the past. Additionally, the school has several campuses located at international destinations like Hong Kong, Vietnam, France and Brazil. If you've been thinking about spending some time abroad, you may find RWU to be very accommodating to your wishes.
Bristol is a relatively small city, with a population of about 22,000. However, it has a lot to offer people interested in spending some time off campus. There are plenty of great restaurants to check out - plus, you can easily hop on a train and be in Providence or Newport in a matter of hours. If you're interested in a big city experience, you'll find either of these to be great places to check out on a weekend.
