All about

University of the Arts, PA

Aptly named, the University of the Arts in Philadelphia, Pennsylvania, is a four-year institution where performers and artists enroll to study everything from dance to photography to screenwriting. Student living at the university began in 1985, the result of a merger between the Philadelphia College of Performing Arts and the Philadelphia College of Art. However, because these two institutions trace their origins to the 1870s, the University of the Arts is often considered one of the country’s oldest universities solely dedicated to the study of the arts. Its campus and student housing is ideally located in Center City, composing the Avenue of the Arts. A university apartment in this region positions students among the city’s finest resources for performance, art and media.

Three separate colleges compose a unique student living experience at The University of the Arts. The school’s two original schools are the College of Art and Design, and the College of Performing Arts, while the College of Media and Communication was added in 1996. Despite the heavy emphasis on the arts, the school requires students to take one-third of their classes from the Division of Liberal Arts, and all are invited to take classes at the nearby University of the Sciences in Philadelphia. Alongside student housing at UArts, students find a variety of resources to support their study, including 7 on-campus theaters, the largest of which can seat 1,840 people.

A University apartment near the Avenue of Arts grants students a measure of independence as they explore Center City and seek career opportunities.
