Slippery Rock University is set in the eponymous town of Slippery Rock, in western Pennsylvania. With a population just over 3,000 residents, the small borough provides an intimate environment for student living that is often cooperative with the community at large. Residents show up in droves to support the school’s sports teams, while students enter Slippery Rock’s small downtown for the bars and restaurants that line Main Street. Slippery Rock University, locally known as The Rock, has been a part of the community since it was established in 1889. The institution has become one of Pennsylvania’s 14 state universities and has expanded to serve more than 7,000 undergraduates and nearly 700 postgraduates, many of whom reside in a university apartment in the area.
Those who live in Slippery Rock University student housing may pursue a degree through one of the institution’s four colleges: the College of Business, Information and Social Sciences, the College of Education, the College of Health, Environment and Science, and the College of Humanities, Fine and Performing arts. Through these divisions, SRU students may pursue a bachelor’s or master’s degree, or pursue a doctoral program in cooperation with Indiana University of Pennsylvania.
Slippery Rock University’s campus is one of the largest in western Pennsylvania, and dominates the community landscape. Off campus housing surrounds the school, with the most popular university apartments located to the south, near downtown hubs like the Ginger Hill Tavern for food and drink.
