One of Pennsylvania State University’s Commonwealth campuses, Penn State York was established in 1939 with the goal of bringing student living to students interested in technical education in York, Pennsylvania. Today, about 1,600 students enroll at the school and find student housing in the surrounding suburban area. York, the so-called White Rose City, is small enough to provide a comfortable and manageable experience, but large enough to host a smattering of cultural attractions, nightlife and downtown excitement. Those who enroll at Penn State York do so for a multitude of different reasons, but student housing is available throughout the community to meet a variety of lifestyle needs.
Students at Penn State York may matriculate to begin their career through a certificate program, or pursue a variety of associates, baccalaureate or graduate degrees. The unique student living arrangement allows students to complete basic degree requirements at the York campus, before transferring to Penn State’s main campus at University Park to finish their program. Nonetheless, nine four-year degrees can still be completed entirely on-site, including a degree in the relatively new Community Studies program.
Students often choose to rent off campus housing as they pursue a degree. A university apartment in York provides a measure of independence and permanence, and allows students to more fully engage with the community. Accessible highlights around the city include the Strand-Capital Performing Arts Center, the historic York Fair, and the New York Wire Company, where the loudest non-amplified music was ever recorded.
