Indiana University of Pennsylvania, PA

In 1875, Indiana University of Pennsylvania first opened its doors to just 225 students to train them for careers as teachers. More than 130 years later, the university has become the fifth largest institution of higher learning in the state, and the largest in the Pennsylvania State System of Higher Education. More than 15,000 undergraduate and graduate students arrive at IUP for a top-rated student living experience and education in a multitude of academic areas. Student housing for those enrolled at Indiana University is located throughout the town of Indiana, which sits about 55 miles northeast of Pittsburgh. The comfortable size and historic downtown area make the city an ideal choice for student living.

Through eight separate colleges, the university offers 140 undergraduate degree programs and 70 graduate degree programs. In addition, IUP carries the distinction of being the only institution in the state educational system to offer doctoral degrees. Students in a dorm or university apartment gain access to several unique attractions on the Indiana University campus, including a planetarium, the University Museum, a black box theater, and an extensive music library. In June 2007, Consumers Digest magazine selected IUP as number four in the magazine’s rankings of the “Best Values in Public Colleges and Universities.”

Students who live in off campus housing near campus are exposed to the charm of the area’s historic neighborhoods. Twelve buildings and neighborhoods from Indiana, Pennsylvania are listed on the National Register of Historic Places, including Graff’s Market and the old County Jail, which students with a university apartment can still visit.
