Eastern University, which has four campuses scattered around Eastern Pennsylvania, was founded in 1925 as part of the Eastern Baptist Theological Seminary, and retains an affiliation with the American Baptist Churches. The school’s main campus has brought student living to St. Davids, Pennsylvania, which sits about 15 minutes outside of Philadelphia. With an interdenominational student body, Eastern University today enrolls about 4,000 undergraduates and 1,200 graduate students, many of whom have found off campus housing near one of the institution’s campuses. Two satellite campus locations in Philadelphia and a third in Wynewood allow Eastern University’s young scholars to find a university apartment that is most conducive to their lifestyle.
Eastern University consists of five colleges: the Palmer Theological Seminary, College of Arts and Sciences, Esperanza College, Templeton Honors College and Campolo College of Graduate and Professional Studies. Most undergraduates are enrolled in the College of Arts and Sciences, which offers majors in 31 fields of study. Those in Eastern University student housing at the main campus sometimes take a break from studying to paint messages and pictures on a boulder in the center of campus - a tradition that has been carried on since the early 1960s.
By renting an Eastern University apartment, students are able to experience their new community to a greater degree, and find a housing situation that fits their needs. Off campus housing in St. Davids puts students in a neighborhood that supports several colleges and universities with the usual pubs, restaurants and entertainment venues that support student living.
