California University of Pennsylvania, PA

Though the name might be a bit misleading, California University is actually located in the southwest corner of Pennsylvania, in a town of just more than 5,000 residents. The town, called California, is a historic area that provides a tranquil setting for student living at Cal U. The school itself was founded in 1852, when a small community contributed donations to open an institution that taught courses from kindergarten through college. Today, California University of Pennsylvania has changed substantially, offering a wide array of undergraduate and graduate courses to about 9,400 students, who reside in student housing in the area.

Since 1962, California University has been offering higher education courses and graduate programs to students in the area. Today, the tally exceeds 150 undergraduate programs and 11 graduate fields. In further efforts to improve student living at Cal U, the school has invested substantially in its facilities. In addition to greatly expanding student housing, the institution has renovated the Steele Auditorium, the Heron Hall recreation center, and built the new Convocation Center, which opened in 2011 as one of the largest indoor venues in the region.

Students at Cal U often rent off campus housing to best fit their lifestyle needs. A California University apartment may position students along the banks of the Monongahela River, which flows past campus and a number of downtown hot spots, such as J Cole’s Inn, on the corner of Third Street and Wood Street.
