Bryn Mawr, Pennsylvania, a town named in Welsh after the "Big Hill" that dominates its geography, is home to the excitement of student living at Bryn Mawr College. The institution, which has been a community landmark for more than 125 years, was founded in 1885 by the Religious Society of Friends, or Quakers. From the start student living at the school became historic as Bryn Mawr College became the first institution of higher learning to offer graduate degrees, including doctorates, to women. Again, in 1912, the school made history by becoming the first college in the U.S. to offer doctorate degrees in social work, through its Department of Social Economy and Social Research. Despite frequent innovation, Bryn Mawr College has retained several long-held traditions, such as its liberal arts principles and status as a single sex institution.
Throughout the years, enrollment at the college rose to about 1,300 undergraduate students and 450 graduate students, who occupy both student housing on campus and college apartments. Boasting a wide variety of academic specialties and degree programs, the school granted 331 bachelor's degrees, 106 master's degrees and 21 doctoral degrees in 2009. Bryn Mawr College's academic reputation and high selectivity is a main attraction to student living at the school. For the 2012 school year, the U.S. News & World Report ranked it the 25th best liberal arts college in the nation.
Off campus housing in Bryn Mawr, Pennsylvania, positions students among several other regional colleges and a community that supports the student lifestyle. A college apartment can add convenience to a student's busy schedule, and place them amid the popular shops and eateries on West Lancaster Avenue. The Byrn Mawr Film Institute and Silk Cuisine for pad Thai and drunken noodles are particularly notable attractions.
