Marylhurst University (MU) is a private Catholic institution located in the city of Marylhurst, Oregon, just nine miles south of Portland on the Willamette River. It is one of the oldest degree-granting schools in the entire state, having originally been founded in 1893. MU was established by members of the Sisters of the Holy Names of Jesus and Mary, a Roman Catholic clergy from Montreal. It continued to expand in size and scope, awarding its first Master of Art Therapy degree in 1986, which remains the only accredited one of its type in the Pacific Northwest. In 1990, Marylhurst began offering a master's degree in business, and the school is now regarded as one of the best values for any student living in the area.
Marylhurst boasts a number of different degrees for you to choose from, including anthropology, religious studies, English, science and music therapy. Graduate degrees are also available in several fields, such as teaching, divinity, ministry and applied theology. On-campus activities for those living in student housing are varied, including the Marylhurst Art Gym, a contemporary exhibition space that takes advantage of what was once an unused gymnasium.
Although the city of Marylhurst is fairly small, those looking for an off campus apartment may find exactly what they're looking for in Portland, the denizens of which regard themselves as incredibly culturally aware. You'll definitely never be lacking in things to do if you live there - it's filled with art festivals and excellent local food throughout the year - perfect for progressively-minded individuals who'd like to find a home that agrees with their world-view.
