Situated in the city of Sayre, Oklahoma is Southwestern Oklahoma State University (SWOSU), a public institution aimed at giving any student living in the area the opportunity to expand his or her educational horizons. Originally established in 1901, SWOSU began its life as a normal school, which are institutions devoted specifically toward training young teachers. After offering a few two-year programs for some time, the school eventually began to expand its curriculum, growing significantly after World War II. In 1987, Sayre Junior College merged with SWOSU, resulting in the university's current iteration.
