Situated in Muskogee, Oklahoma, is Bacone College, a private four-year liberal arts institution that aims to provide students in the area with the opportunity to learn in a variety of fields from a dedicated and talented faculty. Bacone is one of the oldest continuously operated schools in all of Oklahoma, sharing ties with a number of Native American tribes, including the Cherokee Nation and the Muscogee Creek Nation. The school also works closely with American Baptist Churches USA. A student living in the area may find exactly what he or she is looking for at Muskogee, whether it's a rich educational experience or a vast array of social activities.
The school traces its roots back to the American Baptist Home Mission Society, and was founded in the early 1900s. Back then, Bacone had a very small student body - the very first semester, there were only three students. That number had expanded four-fold by the time the second semester had ended. Faculty members eventually realized the need to expand, and before long were seeking out new land through which it could be done. Bacone College continued to grow into the school that it is today, with a student population of about 900.
The city of Muskogee has plenty to offer those looking in an off campus apartment. It is home to Honor Heights Park, a World War I memorial notable for its beautiful azaleas. In fact, it's the site of the annual Azaleas Festival, as well as a popular Christmas light display. Those looking for something a little more involved may find what they need by hopping a train and heading to Oklahoma City, which is not too far off.
