Youngstown State University, OH

Though not one of Ohio’s most identifiable cities, Youngstown, which sits on the state’s eastern border, is a robust community that offers unique food, entertainment and student living in its downtown area and surrounding neighborhoods. A buttress for this community, Youngstown State University has been in town since 1908, and has slowly grown into an academic institution that attracts students from around the world to dorms and university apartments in the Ohio city. In recent years, enrollment has peaked at around 15,000 undergraduate and graduate students who carry out a variety of studies and academic research on campus.

In total, Youngstown State University has 35 master’s programs and more than 100 undergraduate majors distributed throughout its seven colleges. In addition, the university is home to the Dana School of Music, which is one of the oldest non-conservatory schools of music in the U.S. The wind ensemble from this school has played at New York’s Carnegie Hall, where it received a standing ovation.

Because YSU is primarily a commuter school, off campus housing is a large part of student life. Of the schools 15,000 students, only about 1,000 live on campus. The remaining majority are scattered in off campus housing throughout the area, which lays just north of downtown Youngstown. A lesser-known Ohio metropolis, Youngstown has carved its own niche with plenty of entertainment downtown, centered at the Chevrolet Center, the Powers Auditorium, the DeYor Performing Arts Center and the Oakland Centers for the Performing Arts.
